The truth is that eating and the self-hate it causes are a major challenge for most of us, and it never, ever stops.  Holding yourself or others responsible will seldom improve your control, your weight, or your relationships.  The best way to deal with weight issues is also a lot like how you deal with Sarah Palin:  accept that they won’t go away, and don’t let your feelings ruin your appetite.<br />

<p>Most people aren’t happy with the way they look or how much they weigh, and all people spend at least a little time each day being unhappy, but many still manage to live normal, albeit slight chubby/grumpy lives.</p>
<p>As to the source of your insecurities, your guess is as good as mine and the many other scientists, clinicians, and desperate-for-a-topic writers who explain this phenomenon.  It could be your ex, or it could reading too much Cosmo.</p>
<p>These experts assume, for the most part, that you wouldn’t be so self-critical if you didn’t listen to magazines, celebrities, or your critical-yet-well-meaning grandmother, and just believed in your self.  They tell you that self-esteem will conquer all.  Of course, they’re wrong.  </p>
<p><span id="more-706"></span>There’s lots of evidence that self-hating body thoughts can happen to people with perfectly good self-esteem, nice families, and normal bodies.  Instead of obsessing about why you feel this way the same way you obsess over calorie counts, stop and ask yourself, first, whether these thoughts are doing you much harm.</p>
<p>I know they’re causing you pain, but ask yourself whether they’re affecting your health or relationships.  Right or wrong, you can think you need to lose a few without hiding major parts of your personalities and or being a bad friend or parent.</p>
<p>If you think your body-hate isn’t doing too much harm, try ignoring it.  Certain kinds of psychotherapy may help, but watch out if you find yourself becoming more self-obsessed and blaming yourself for not getting better.  The mark of good psychotherapy, like good coaching, is that it gives you ideas and motivation for managing a problem without increasing your expectations of control.</p>
<p>If body-hate is hurting your health or relationships—if you purge, have become anemic, or acquired any number of the dire symptoms that come with an eating disorder—assemble a treatment team, including a primary care physician, a psychiatrist and dietitian, and don’t hesitate to put yourself into an around-the-clock “eat-your-food” camp if it’s necessary.  It can save your life.</p>
<p>In any case, don’t pin your hopes and self-esteem on self-control, or self-hating thoughts will just get worse.  If you make it your job to keep trying and regard the illness as you would the weather, it can’t touch your sense of who you are.  </p>
<p>You need never see yourself as a food nut or anorectic;  you’re simply a person with eating issues, which puts you in the same camp as 90% of the population.  You might feel like shit, but you are truly not alone.  </p>
<p><strong>STATEMENT</strong>:<br />
“There’s nothing wrong with my values or approach to life, and I’ve managed to build a good life, except for one problem.  I have an obsession about food and weight that sometimes drives me crazy.  I don’t know that I can stop it, but I will always do whatever is necessary to keep it from ruining my health and relationships.”</p>
<blockquote><p>I feel horrible about this, but ever since my husband gained weight, I find myself feeling much less attracted to him.  Neither one of us has ever been super-models, but after 10 years of marriage, I’ve managed to keep my weight from getting out of control and he hasn’t.  I tell him he should eat less because of his health, and he makes a half-assed effort, but the truth is, I also just hate his body like this.  I’d never tell him that though because he’d be heartbroken and I’d feel like such a jerk.  I’d never leave him over this (we have a family), but not having sex is putting a strain on our relationship, which makes being together so much harder.  How can I want to be with him if he keeps letting himself go?</p></blockquote>
<p>The fact that we spend billions of dollars improving and preserving our sexual attractiveness should be a clear indicator that we have absolutely no control over it.  </p>
<p>Specifically, we don’t control what aging does to our bodies or how we respond to those changes, in ourselves and others.  That’s probably one of the best reasons for not making a big deal out of it; the more we try to control it, the more it tortures us when we can’t.</p>
<p>Many think over-eating should be more controllable than aging, but to those people I say,  try keeping your weight down while making a living, raising a family, and living in the golden age of Oreo Cakesters.  </p>
<p>Even if you achieve your ideal body weight, you know how easily stress, sorrow and even inattention can open the door on your bad old habits.  As Bush II discovered, there’s nothing more demoralising than declaring victory when you’ve temporarily got the upper hand on a problem that is never going to go away.  </p>
<p>Even if weight control is easy for you, you know that it’s not easy for most people, like your husband, regardless of how much they worry about it.  Worrying makes us hungry, as does reading about one more diet that does no better than old diets if you measure progress after a year or two.  So, as much as you miss the old sexual attraction and worry about your husband’s health, don’t get obsessed with the “would-have, should have” of weight control. Blaming him isn’t fair, and will make the problem much more personal.</p>
<p>We’ve had lots of laughs at the expense of those idiot Victorians who advised women who didn’t like sex to “lie back and do it for England.”  Sadly, it seems like there was great wisdom in that advice, particularly when you care about your partner and you’ve run out of other options.</p>
<p>First, though, don’t let guilt over your own negative sexual response—or anger at his “letting himself go”—prevent you from exploring those other options.  Your husband probably wants to lose weight, if for no other reason than to improve his health.  With his agreement, explore all the ways you can create “structure”—incentives and habits— in your daily home routine that will encourage exercise and caloric restraint.  </p>
<p>Without letting yourself become a calorie Nazi, (which, for most of us, would be a worse sex-killer than growing a lady-beard), see if you can shape your menu, pantry contents, and exercise schedule.</p>
<p>If nothing works, fall back on your marriage vows.  The reason you make vows is not because you’re fickle and likely to change your mind about your partner, but because life is hard and will eventually take the things that are fun now and make them difficult.  You can try to help him lose weight (and help yourself), but if that doesn’t work, you need to help your marriage.  </p>
<p>The test of a good marriage is not whether it’s fun, but whether two people continue to like and respect one another when it’s not.  Through sickness and health, slim and flabby.  </p>
<p><strong>STATEMENT</strong>:<br />
“It hurts to have a sexually repulsive husband, particularly after I’ve tried to help him slim down, but the purpose of our partnership was always to create a family and look out for one another, and was never about being young and sexually attractive forever, so I respect myself for putting up with this loss for the sake of a marriage that I value.” </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>We’ve talked many times on this site about how controlling other people is essentially impossible (at least in the long run, but you’d be surprised how obedient people are short-term when you have cake).  That’s why pushing for someone else’s acceptance isn’t just hopeless, but when we put that need ahead of our own convictions and priorities, it’s downright dangerous.  People in AA are taught right off the bat to accept what they can’t change, which is a valuable lesson to anyone, with or without booze (or cake).<br />

<blockquote><p>My husband worries a lot about my drinking and depression but, to my mind, I don’t think my drinking is a problem and I don’t think I’d be depressed if I wasn’t worried that he’d leave me.  For the sake of our marriage, I’ve agreed to stop drinking for a while and go to AA, but I really feel that my drinking wasn’t causing me any problems and that I’m doing this to make him happy, which makes me feel weak and angry.  I want to get him to accept me the way I am before I can’t take it anymore.  </p></blockquote>
<p>You’re in a tough spot, because partnership really can’t work without acceptance, and acceptance is not something you can control.  The more you force acceptance, the harder it is to achieve.  Accept that, buddy.  </p>
<p>If you try too hard to get his acceptance, you’ll hide whatever you think he won’t accept, which means putting your drinking in the closet and going to the mall instead of AA meetings.</p>
<p>On his end, if he tries too hard to make the relationship work, he’ll pretend you’re not really drinking or that you’re going to change, which also means no real acceptance.  </p>
<p><span id="more-692"></span>The sad fact of life is that you are never going to change who you really are, which, at the very least, is a girl who enjoys drinking, and he’s going to have to take it or leave it.  On the other hand, if you present the issue positively and he considers it realistically, maybe acceptance will occur, now that you’re not forcing it.</p>
<p>That’s why your goal shouldn’t be to win acceptance from your love; it’s to find out if your love can be accepting.  He doesn’t need to like your drinking, but you need to know whether he can accept that it’s part of your package and accept the whole deal.</p>
<p>Instead of getting him to accept you the way you are, begin by accepting yourself.  Forget how much you like to drink and ask yourself, on the basis of your own experience and what you’ve read, whether drinking gets in the way of anything you hold dear, like your health or making a living or being a good woman and a good friend.  If in doubt, stop drinking for a while and see if there’s any difference. </p>
<p>Once you know your own mind, lay things on the line with your husband in a positive way.  Of course, if you’ve come to agree that you’re a lush, let him know that you want to stop drinking because you believe you need to, and not to please him.  </p>
<p>Otherwise, state your differences positively while letting him know how much you’d like him to accept you, if he can.  If he can’t, then that’s a sad reality you both have to accept on your own.  </p>
<p><strong>STATEMENT</strong>:<br />
Prepare a statement of your own views that is not overly reactive to his.  “I respect your concern for my drinking and regret that it worries you.  I’ve looked hard at how much it affects my health, work, and friendships.  In the end, I don’t see it as causing me problems and, as much as I love you, it won’t help our relationship to appease unfounded fears.  I hope you’ll accept my decision.  Meanwhile, I think we should drop the topic of my drinking and, hopefully, move on to other things.”</p>
<blockquote><p>My daughter is severely bipolar and lives with us so my wife and I can try to make sure she takes her meds and doesn’t hurt herself.  We aren’t always successful—she’s practically an adult now and hates when we parent her—so she stopped taking her meds because she thought she didn’t need them anymore.  Now she’s extremely manic, maybe using hard drugs, and extremely irritable.   We’re absolutely helpless and there’s nothing we can do because she won’t talk to us.  Our goal is to get her to listen to us, stop drugging, and get back on her meds.</p></blockquote>
<p>Mental illness makes all families helpless; after all, it’s hard to have a dialogue with someone whose brain is diseased, irritable, inattentive and unresponsive.  You’d have better luck reasoning with a rabid wolverine.  </p>
<p>If you believe that your only power derives from your ability to have a heart-to-heart talk with her, then you are, indeed, helpless.  The good news is, you’re wrong.  After all, you can help wild horses improve their self-control without first teaching them English.  Thus, you, too, can become a bipolar whisperer. </p>
<p>As parents and landlords, you control a number of powerful incentives, like access to money, car, refrigerator, shelter, and, oh yeah, money.  That doesn’t mean you can control her or her illness, but it does mean you can create some pretty strong reasons for her to do the good things she needs to do.</p>
<p>Set rehabilitation goals for your daughter that you believe are truly essential, which will probably include sobriety, doing enough household chores in order to live independently, controlling violent behavior, and stopping sudden impulses from affecting her safety or treatment.  Add or subtract from these core goals, based on your own experience and other parents’ war stories.</p>
<p>Once you know your priorities, announce them and back them up with rules and incentives for following them.  I said announce, not converse.  If you’re too worried about her anger or hurt or lack of understanding, you’ll be ineffective.  </p>
<p>Don’t pick a fight, but don’t hold back on saying what you think with friendliness, conviction, and optimism.  Tone of voice is as important as content.  Don’t end   sentences with a rising, Valley Girl inflection that asks for approval.  Use the same calm, assertive energy praised by Cesar Millan.</p>
<p>Yes, there’s a risk that she’ll do something dangerous or force you to ask her to leave, but a bipolar-veteran parent knows how to manage crises without appearing to panic.  It’s a risk you need to take, and be prepared for, because the alternative is way worse than facing an angry four-legged beast.</p>
<p><strong>STATEMENT</strong>:<br />
You need a statement that says, “This is what we believe, here are the rules that are required for self-control and independence and this, very simply, is what will happen if you don’t follow them.  There are no punishments and we do not believe you are being stubborn or childish; but we will withhold privileges and, if necessary, ask you to live elsewhere for a while if we think it’s necessary, either because your behavior makes it impossible for us to live with you, endangers your safety, or blocks you from making progress.”</p>

I have two children, a loving husband, a usually good job, a fine house and truthfully a full and rich life.  So why do things like not getting out the door on time and literally spilled milk make me lose it?  I should disclose that I grew up with insanity in my household, my father is a full blown paranoid schizophrenic, my mom a bit of a drinker, however that said I truly do try to parent better than I was parented.  I wonder many times am I crazy and would like to have a better handle on my temper.</p></blockquote>
<p>The kind of anger that ruins everything isn’t your problem.  If it was, you wouldn’t still have the loving husband, good job, and lack of restraining orders.  </p>
<p>It goes without saying then that you have pretty good control over your anger, but let’s say it, because it needs to be said.  Your temper hurts and humiliates you and stirs your remorse, but it’s not ruining your life because you’re good at managing it.</p>
<p>It would be nice if you could get rid of your temper and become sweet, calm, and serene, but for most of us, our temper is part of the internal wiring.  Sure, your parents/family history might contribute, and exploring “the real cause of your anger” might help; but often it doesn’t.  Usually, the temper you’ve got is the temper you’ve got.</p>
<p><span id="more-688"></span>Lobotomy is the one treatment you can count on.  (I’ve been wanting to re-tool as a surgeon for some time because procedures pay much better than talking treatments, with the death panels and whatnot, you know the drill.)  </p>
<p>If, however, you’re too much of a sissy to accept the necessary frontal lobe alterations, your temper is something you’re stuck with, and you’d better get used to it, because nothing makes a bad temper worse than hating the one you’ve got.</p>
<p>Remember, there’s a stigma against anger.  Oscar the Grouch is one of the uglier Muppets and the Hulk is hardly handsome.  </p>
<p>On the other hand, if bad tempers were really terrible, then evolution wouldn’t have produced so many of them.  They’re probably good for being a soldier or a litigator.  God/Darwin/The Flying Spaghetti Monster/etc. always has his/her reasons for the strong inheritance of painful traits.</p>
<p>Now, if you’ve stopped fuming about being an ill-tempered mama, draw a line for yourself on what prevents someone with an evil temper from being a bad person.  The first thing on the list of forbidden line-crossers is the obvious:  no hitting.  Following that is no causing friends and family a lot of pain, no useless bridge-burning or house-burning, and so on.  </p>
<p>Your goal then isn’t to get a new temper at Target (they’re fresh out), but to keep that bad temper from turning nasty, no matter how much you feel that it would be a great relief.  </p>
<p>Yes, if you don’t let it out, your anger will build up inside, but that’s the price you pay.  Keep it there until you can yell in the bathroom, or hit a punching-bag, or practice the drums for hours at a time.</p>
<p>If you want help learning how to further manage your anger, read up on, you guessed it, anger management.  It can help to talk to other, more accomplished anger-managers—some are quite nice, if you don’t step on their toes—and you can certainly use all the tools of self-acceptance and self-control that 12-step programs offer.  It’s more expensive, but you can also check out the ideas and exercises offered by a cognitive behavioral therapist.</p>
<p>If your temper is really impossible and other methods don’t work, consider seeing a psychiatrist for a medication trial.  For some reason, psychiatric medications can help, though they’re not a cure.  They pose very little risk of serious side effects when you’re just trying them out for a month or two.</p>
<p>In your journey to accepting your rage, do yourself a favor and avoid books about healing your inner anger.  They’re not just useless, but also incredibly annoying, and if you hurl such a book through a window, I’m not paying for the damages.  The offer for the lobotomy, however, is still on the table.</p>
<p><strong>STATEMENT</strong>:<br />
Here’s a statement to stop you from getting mad about getting mad.  “I don’t like having a bad temper, but I must be pretty good at controlling it because my family hasn’t (yet) run away, locked me up, or restraining-ordered me out.  So I’ll respect myself for doing what I’ve always tried to do:  shut up, pull my punches, and keep my temper under control.</p>
<blockquote><p>I seem to instinctively know which battles to pick with my kids, however I clearly have &#8220;battle planning deficit disorder&#8221; when it comes to my wife.  Neither of us likes confrontation of ANY sort, so we &#8220;appear&#8221; to ignore things that bug each other…but not really.  Instead, we try to ignore the giant gorilla in the room and this negative undercurrent hangs around until some outside force like kid drama, aging parent issue, health..SOMETHING happens to distract us from whatever it was we were both &#8220;ignoring.&#8221;  If, on the rare occasion I do confront her on some issue, she gets so DEFENSIVE, the conversation comes to an immediate halt.  If she confronts me on something, we tend to go round and round.  We&#8217;ve been married 20 years, so obviously this has become a well choreographed routine, but one that I&#8217;m still not comfortable with.  How do you know what&#8217;s &#8220;confrontable material&#8221;, and what&#8217;s just &#8220;white noise&#8221; in a relationship that should be ignored?  </p></blockquote>
<p>I’m assuming from the fact that you’re doing well with the kids and not talking about divorce that your marriage is worth it.  I often hear from patients who wish they could argue less with their spouse, so someone wanting to figure out how to argue more, or at least argue better, is an interesting change of pace.  </p>
<p>First, figure out your criteria for deciding which battles are worth—I won’t say fighting, because the two of you aren’t compatible fighters—so let’s say, addressing.</p>
<p>Let not irritation be your guide, because you don’t want anger to determine your choice.  Choose the issues that matter in the long run because they involve your values, safety, health, financial security, the kids’ development, or anything to do with lawyers. </p>
<p>With any battle, you’ve got to ask yourself what you hope to accomplish and whether there’s any way to win.  No matter how much you want it, or how much it might lead to an increase in the total amount of fairness in the universe, you’re not going to change your wife, so there’s no point in trying.  So ask yourself, given that fact, whether there’s any way you can make things better.</p>
<p>If, as is often the case, her agreement or understanding is unlikely, don’t talk to her before you decide whether there’s something you feels needs doing, and are prepared to do on your own, whether she agrees or not. </p>
<p>Knowing that you’re thinking for yourself will help you feel less angry and wimpy, even if, as most often happens, you decide there’s no reason to take a stand.</p>
<p>Talk to her if you think you’ll have to act independently because of disagreement.  Don’t feel obliged to be eloquent or good at explaining your actions, because the important thing is not what she thinks, or whether she agrees, but that she sees that you believe in what you’re doing and that you’re not doing it out of anger or disrespect.  </p>
<p>In declaring your intentions, show respect and keep your announcement short.  Tell her what you plan to do and why you think it’s better, and, of course, invite her to join you.  When you’ve said your piece, close the discussion so as to prevent filibuster.  </p>
<p>Ultimately, it’s not about arguing at all, just about sharing your choices vis a vis the negative undercurrent situations in your marriage.  You can acknowledge the metaphorical gorilla in the room as you would the real thing:  calmly, confidently, and with a quick escape route.</p>
<p><strong>STATEMENT</strong>:<br />
Here’s a statement for picking issues and avoiding battles.  “It’s too bad that my wife and I are not good at arguing our way through disagreements, but that hasn’t stopped us from achieving 20 years of pretty good marriage.  It also won’t stop me from taking a stand if and when I think it’s necessary, as long as I can accept the fact that, as much as I love and respect her, there are times that we aren’t going to understand or agree with one another.”</p>

<p>Having fun with your husband is not your top measure of a partner.  If you want fun, go out and have a drink.  </p>
<p>Acceptance, rather than fun or passion, is the most essential requirement for a long-term relationship, and now you know it.  Oh, first marriages have so much to teach you.</p>
<p><span id="more-661"></span>To find out whether you can accept a prospective partner, don’t go on a bar crawl; spend time together sober, tired, stressed, hungry, and short of money.  </p>
<p>You’ll find out whether you can work together and trust the guy to do his share, shut up about the things he doesn’t like, and not irritate you too much by what he says when he’s dumb.  That’s a better measure of true love than the tingle you get from laughing at one another’s sloshed jokes.</p>
<p>You have two choices at this point in your marriage.  One possibility is to accept your husband the way he is and try to put aside the understandable anger and sadness about what you’ve lost.  You can’t have the happy guy back unless you also want his alcoholism, and you don’t.</p>
<p>By the way, if your goal is to communicate with him before you’ve decided whether you can accept him, you’ll probably give him an earful of your sorrow, disappointment, and anger, and that will drive him away, but not before giving you an earful in return.  Your best bet is to shut up until you’ve made up your mind.</p>
<p>The other choice, if you can’t accept your husband the way he is, is to stop being married.  It’s not pretty, but the fact is, you can’t talk him into being the guy you want.  Talk instead to yourself about whether you can accept the sober guy he now is.</p>
<p>Having finished your most important conversation—with yourself—you’re now ready to let him know which direction you want to go in.   Either you can make it work with your dry husband, or take your newly acquired wisdom to marriage #2.</p>
<p><strong>STATEMENTS</strong>:<br />
Here are two alternate statements that avoid negative statements about who he isn’t and say positive things about what you want to do.</p>
<p>If you think you can accept him:  “I want us to spend more time together.  I’ve been hung over from the indirect effect of alcohol on our relationship; but I respect what you’ve done and I want to try new, sober ways for us to have fun, find common interests, and work together.”</p>
<p>If you know you can’t accept him:  “I admire your sobriety, but alcohol interfered with my ability to get to know you, and, now that I know you better, I respect what you’ve done but think that we’re not meant for one another.”</p>
<blockquote><p>I’ve been working for the same company for almost twenty years.  I started at the very bottom and have worked my way up to a respectable position in middle management.  I’ve never gotten a poor review, never had a dispute with a superior, never let my responsibilities slide.  That’s why I’m totally bewildered by my new boss’ persistent criticism of my performance.  I haven’t changed a thing, but he’s constantly telling me he thinks I’m slow on my projects, even though he can’t pin down anything I’m doing wrong.  My goal is to get him to see that it’s his judgment, not my ability, that’s flawed.  </p></blockquote>
<p>The trouble with telling your boss he’s wrong is that it pushes him to find more fault with you.  The chance of changing his mind, if he’s really down on you, is zip.  </p>
<p>If anything, he’s more likely to prove he’s right by making it his project to get you fired.  If you can’t convince him he’s wrong with your stellar performance, a talking-to won’t help.  Sadly, you’re now employee of the month at Fucked Industries.  </p>
<p>If you pay too much attention to his response, you’ll get angry at his lack of respect or appreciation for your good work, which will cause you to scowl, lose your motivation, and do less work, which will prove him right and make your actions and self-respect reactive to his stupidity.  Don’t talk to him, and don’t react to him more than absolutely necessary.</p>
<p>Instead, assess your own work and be sure it meets your own standards; if you have two decades of positive reviews, that’s tons of evidence that it does.  Then move forward, knowing that your work is OK, you’re probably not going to change your boss’s mind, and you need to make a living.</p>
<p>If it’s safe, see if you’ve got enough support from other higher-ups to counteract your boss’ influence.  Warm up your résumé, and start looking at other options (e.g., if there’s an opening at It’s A Living And Co.)</p>
<p>Now you’re ready to talk to him.  Give him a prepared, positive response that edits out all anger, attack, or defense, and pose for your “employee of the month” picture with a shit-eating grin.  </p>
<p><strong>STATEMENT</strong>:<br />
“I greatly regret that you have not been satisfied with my work.  I paid close attention to your comments, reviewed my work habits, and considered ways of either improving my work, if I thought it was deficient, and/or presenting it to better advantage if I thought communication was the problem.  I’ve reviewed supervisory input from the past 20 years—all of it positive, I’m happy to say—requested additional input from current colleagues, and compared current with past performance.  My conclusion is that I’ve been doing good work and that your dissatisfaction results from a difference in our styles.  I will continue to listen carefully to your input and hope to win your satisfaction.”</p>

<p>Some girls prefer being married to someone who’s never around but pays the bills.  Those girls and your husband have something in common, whether you like it or not.  </p>
<p>Before figuring out how to save your marriage, ask yourself what you want your marriage for (and don’t say love—you should know better).  </p>
<p><span id="more-648"></span>You’re an executive, so be as specific about the amount of availability you would write into the partnership as you would for a job description:  hours per week, time of day, degree of alertness, freedom from inebriation, etc.  </p>
<p>Keep sitting on that save-your-marriage urge long enough to ask yourself, regardless of how much you nagged him and/or how much he loves you, what the likelihood is of his doing the amount of necessary face time with a non-shack-rehabbing marital partner.  </p>
<p>The way you describe him, not fuckin’ likely; he’s not into hanging out with a girl who’s not into holding a hammer (unless maybe she’s handing over a credit card).</p>
<p>If that’s true, you’re in luck and out-of-luck.  Out of luck because there was never much chance he’d meet your marital requirements, and the chances aren’t going to improve, no matter how sweetly you try to entice him into marital therapy and how persuasive the therapist is.  </p>
<p>You’re in luck, however, because your nagging isn’t at fault, and you have nothing to blame yourself for, so we’re not going to talk about how your nagging drove him away or how a therapist can glue him back on. </p>
<p>Now that we’ve killed off false hope, think about ways to make the best of things. Ask yourself how to avoid making the same mistake twice, given the fact that you probably knew his habits from the beginning and then talked yourself into believing he’d change.  </p>
<p>If you still think guys change, slap yourself.  People don’t change, but that doesn’t mean you change your approach towards relationships.  Be an executive at work and in your personal life, and be glad your husband quit.  </p>
<p><strong>STATEMENT</strong>:<br />
Here’s a statement to point you forward.  &#8220;I hate losing this marriage, but my goal is to find a good partner, not create one from someone who doesn’t have the right material.  Partners aren’t made, they’re found.  My job is to use my experience with this marriage to choose better next time.&#8221;</p>

I wasn’t jealous, I just needed her.  But then we got married, and I graduated and started my own specialty training, and suddenly—it was like a switch clicked—I stopped needing her and didn’t really want to be around her.  Now it’s 4 years later and we’ve got a couple kids and the trapped feelings just keeps getting stronger.  It’s tough, because she’s a very nice person, she doesn’t do anything wrong, and she wants to make our marriage work, and I feel totally guilty, because I just don’t want to be with her.  How can I get our old chemistry back?</p></blockquote>
<p>Some people believe the measure of a good partnership is an equally balanced feeling of need for one another—wanting her as much as she wants you—and you’re the living, breathing example of why that’s not so.</p>
<p>You didn’t want your neediness to blind you into thinking your then-girlfriend had strong feelings about you, if she didn’t.  Congratulations, she did and does really love you.  Unfortunately, what you were blind to was the depth of your own feelings.</p>
<p>The trouble is, needy feelings come and go depending on your confidence, mood, loneliness, horniness, whatever.  Neediness makes you blind, which is why satisfying your needy feelings shouldn’t be in the partnership job description.</p>
<p>Instead, consider your actual needs as you would if you were looking for a partner in your practice.  You need someone you like to spend time with and can rely on, whether you’re needy or not.  </p>
<p>So here’s the standard procedure:  the more you’re crazy about someone, the more you should take it slow.  Clean out a basement together,  travel long distances and sleep in crummy motels together, foster a diabetic cat together, whatever, just put your relationship to the test to see if it’s a shared partnership or a personal fix.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, the old chemistry can’t be retrieved and wasn’t the real thing, in any case, so give up that goal and stop wallowing in guilt.   You might not need her anymore, but your kids do, so you’ve got to figure out how to make the best of it.  </p>
<p><strong>STATEMENT</strong>:<br />
Here’s a statement to address her and your own conscience.  “I would do anything to make this partnership work but I made a mistake in thinking my need for you was the same as good, solid attraction and acceptance.   Now that I’m feeling less needy, I can’t find the necessary chemistry and I can’t help not loving you.  You haven’t changed.  It’s no one’s fault.  Meanwhile, we have a good family, and I need to keep it strong while managing the bad chemistry that makes it impossible for me to give you what you deserve.”</p>

<p>Don’t confuse being a giving person with being a good person.  Being good is supposed to be selfless, but giving is a self-serving pleasure, and that should tell you that it’s easy to overdo and/or do for the wrong reasons.  </p>
<p>You might think I’m wrong, and insist you’re giving because you enjoy it and want to make the world a better place.  If so, you best put on a bib, because you’re talking a lot of shit.  </p>
<p><span id="more-636"></span>From what you’re saying, there’s a part of you that needs to get back what you’re giving, and seethes if you don’t get it back, soon.  Venting your anger drives away potential friends, which makes you feel needier, which makes your giving more compulsive.  </p>
<p>It turns into a neat vicious circle;  you remember their birthdays, they forget yours, you’re so angry that you get into a fight and stop talking, which makes you feel that much more friend-hungry. </p>
<p>That’s a lot of birthdays to remember (and forget when you stop speaking to each other).</p>
<p>Instead of focusing on the feelings you get from the immediate give-and-take (or not-give) of your friendships, step back and think about what makes a friendship good.   You want someone who’s reliable and has something good to offer, sooner or later, in deed more than word.  You want support, not a timely Hallmark card.  </p>
<p>If you’re needy, it’s just as easy to be suckered by friendly words from a slick type who doesn’t usually keep his friends as it is to reject an awkward verbal misfit who has the solid character and track record you’re looking for.</p>
<p>So stop all the giving and birthday-honoring.  Stifle your fuckin’ Christmas spirit.  Give in smaller amounts, wait, and see who your real friends are.  They’re the ones who will give back, eventually, if you can keep your disappointment to yourself and get your standards in check.  </p>

Give yourself simple, reasonable rules for managing your expectations.  “I like giving and receiving close attention, but I put a higher value on friends who are steady and reliable over the long run and don’t require, or necessarily give, constant attention.  I’m willing to ignore it if they’re insensitive or forget about my birthday, even if it hurts, as long as I know that, on a deeper level, they’re good friends.”</p>
<blockquote><p>My girlfriend has been on my ass to see a therapist about my “issues” as a new dad, but this is as close to therapy as I’m willing to get, so here goes.  My girlfriend got pregnant and now we live together and have a baby.  I work, she stays home with the kid, and after work, I like to go out with my friends and blow off steam before going home to face my girlfriend and baby, who are both crying and pissed.  My girlfriend is mad at me for not being more responsible or accepting the fact I’m a dad now, but I didn’t ask to be a dad, and I am being responsible by taking care of my family, and I don’t think it’s asking too much to want some time to myself so I don’t lose my goddamned mind.  My goal is to get my girlfriend off my ass.</p></blockquote>
<p>There are lots of funny songs about the guilty pleasures of honky-tonking with your bar buddies while the old ball-and-chain gets set to chew you out when you get home.  It stops being funny if she gives you your freedom, restricts visitation, and takes half your assets.  </p>
<p>Whether you like it or not, you’ve got a family and you need to think about whether it’s worth keeping.  You should have thought about this before you went condomless, but hey, hindsight’s 20/20 and all that.</p>
<p>Instead of jerking your knee in defiant reflex to a naggy woman, ask yourself what kind of father your child needs and whether meeting those needs is more important than your freedom.  </p>
<p>Yes, you didn’t plan to start a family, it’s unfair to you, but it’s also unfair to your baby to be a jackass who values me-time over parenting.</p>
<p>Add up the advantages of family life;  it’s whatever you’ll hate to lose if you divorce.  If in doubt, ask a lawyer what you can expect to lose.  Then, weigh it against what you hate about family life.  Now you’re ready for a decision.</p>
<p>If she nags you, don’t get distracted by the idea that staying around is a form of wussiness,  and going to the bar shows manly assertiveness.  Don’t let your “don’t-tread-on-me” instinct decide the fate of your marriage.</p>
<p>If you need time with your buddies, negotiate with respect.  You’ll be more effective if you stifle your manly swagger;  it’s not an issue of being whipped by your wife, because you’re already fate’s bitch.  Grow up, shut up, and for chrissakes, use birth control.  </p>

Then again, those traits don&#8217;t make being faithful impossible, so before you make assumptions about these traits, be they yours or your partners, give yourself a chance to see if they can be managed, and have been managed, and whether managing them is worth the trouble. <p>Also, check out your own track record for sharing your significant other with the world.  Regardless of how fascinating she is and how easy-going you’d like to be, you may not be good at sharing.  Don’t fall for her and then try to change her, especially since she&#8217;s going to be spending her time trying to change you.</p>
<p>Don’t be distracted by the social thing, love, jealousy, or any of that feelings slurry.  If her references don’t check out with your basic job description for a partner, drop her or you’ll be sorry.  This isn&#8217;t emotional, this is math.  Even if the facts are crunched in your favor, be prepared to share, or move on.</p>

Assuming that she meets your partnership criteria and that you like most of her friends and exes, and their exes, etc, here’s a statement to help you address your joint social priorities.  “I need to know that you’re committed to our spending time alone and with my (much smaller) social and family circle, and that parenting comes first, if we decide to have kids.  I retain the right to opt out of some social events.  Otherwise, I enjoy your style and look forward to sharing in your rich social life.”</p>

She&#8217;s also been very devoted to me, supporting my fledgling career as an artist and even taking a part-time job as my manager (on top of her full-time job, which supports us both).  The problem is that, as much as I love her and as much as I&#8217;ve tried to ignore my feelings for other men, I&#8217;m pretty sure I&#8217;m actually gay.  To admit that I&#8217;m gay would mean divorcing her, which would not only break her heart when all she&#8217;s ever done is sacrifice everything for me, but throw every aspect of my life, personally and professionally, into chaos.  I don&#8217;t want to hurt her or lose her, and, well, I don&#8217;t want to go on welfare.  My goal is to be true to both of us. </p></blockquote>
<p>When you identify as gay, it&#8217;s not clear whether you mean the identity, or the actual sex act.  “I’ve got to be myself” means, yes, you’ve got to be who you are, but no, you don’t have to have sex, unless you want to.</p>
<p>In other words, if having sex is not more important to you than holding onto a relationship that is otherwise meaningful and important, you don’t have to do it.  It&#8217;s really that simple.  You can be gay, and proud, and also proud of not having sex except when you want to, and not hurting someone you care about.  </p>
<p>Now that you know you can control your sexual urges, you’re ready to be a priest, or a not-so-young husband (or wife) whose partner can’t respond.  It’s part of being a grown-up.  One of the extremely un-fun parts, but a part nonetheless.  </p>
<p>If you stick with your wife because she’s a good provider, supporter, and business manager, your relationship sounds somewhat one-way, and that’s not good for either one of you.  </p>
<p>You need to love as well as be loved, and know that you can love.  Otherwise, your secret identify will not be that you’re gay, but that you’re a user.  There&#8217;s a reason users don&#8217;t get pride parades.  </p>
<p>On the other hand, if your wife and you are good friends and have built a life together with shared family and invested energy that would be destroyed by breaking up, then you’ve got to ask yourself whether gay love, sex, lifestyle, etc., are worth more.</p>
<p>Putting sex aside, ask yourself how much of you you’re hiding by hiding this part of your identity from your wife.  Most coupled people need to self-edit—not hide, just edit—even with their closest relationships (particularly with their closest relationships).  </p>
<p>You don’t want to push your partner to hear and respond to what they don’t really want to deal with.  On the other hand, if being gay is part of your everyday thoughts, feelings, and humor, then hiding it makes your relationship false, and does a disservice to her as well as keeping you from being who you really are.  </p>
<p>In which case, you need to share your secret identity (without, hopefully, the complications of sexual infidelity) and see whether she can accept you while you try to figure out whether the new relationship will work.</p>
<p>You&#8217;ll be gay in theory, just not in practice, which&#8217;ll have to be enough if you also want to stay married.</p>

If you happen to choose this option, here’s a statement.  “I think I’m gay and need to be more open about that side of my personality.  No, I don’t think I need to have gay sex or a gay lover, at least not yet.  What I do need is to be more open about my real thoughts and feelings.  I don’t fault myself for not having told you earlier, because I didn’t know myself.  Meanwhile, if you’re willing, I’d like us to continue as partners and see if this can work.”</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Everyone wants a feel-good, look-good family, but most of us relate to the more familiar feel-bad families on TV (which look good, and feel better by the end of the show).  Still, there&#8217;s a difference between your average dysfunctional family unit and your genetic/step-parent clusterfuck.  When your family situation is in truly bad shape, you&#8217;ve got to be tough enough to accept what you&#8217;ve got, then focus on making the best of those impossible relationships, outsider opinions be damned.  Unlike those TV families, real problems don&#8217;t get solved after a half-hour, not everybody&#8217;s pretty, and you have to ignore your ratings with the audience.<br />

<blockquote><p>I need to stay married because, while I work a pretty demanding job, my wife stays at home and watches our two kids, whom she adores.  The problems are, however, (and there are many):  she doesn&#8217;t work because of a migraine disorder that&#8217;s so debilitating that she&#8217;s on disability, and she takes too many non-prescription pain pills for those headaches, and, while they don&#8217;t make her a bad parent (I know the kids are safe), they often make her, in your words, a really needy, grumpy asshole and an impossible woman to be married to.  I never know when she’s going to kick me out of the bedroom, scream at me in front of friends, or nod off after dinner.  Needless to say, she won’t try marriage counseling or cutting back on the pills and thinks I&#8217;m bullying her if I suggest we have a problem.  I can&#8217;t leave her, because it&#8217;d break the kids&#8217; hearts, plus, like I said, she provides childcare, which is not something I could afford on my salary, and if I lost custody of the kids, I&#8217;d be in a worse hell than I am now.  I know I can&#8217;t leave, but I don&#8217;t think I can live like this much longer.  My goal is to find a better way to survive.</p></blockquote>
<p>You’ve got good marital reasons for staying vs. leaving (the kids, the kids, the kids, and money, but also, the kids).  There’s no escaping the fact, however, that her headache is infectious, and you’ve got it, too.</p>
<p>You’ve obviously built up a good, solid tolerance for living with your wife’s problems without fighting all the time, and your values and perspective are great.  Which is why you probably already know that your goal is impossible.  </p>
<p><span id="more-613"></span>Although the pain of living like this is pretty bad, it’s unavoidable, and the alternative, which you’re realistic about, is worse.  The question then becomes, is there anything you can do to make things better.</p>
<p>If by &#8220;things” you mean hanging on to your initial hopes of a peaceful goodnight kiss, talk-things-out, happy-Mother’s-Day kind of marriage, then the best way to make your relationship better is to give up on your dream, take out your hankie, weep, blow your nose, and get on with it.</p>
<p>As you probably know already, trying to manufacture that kind of relationship using the reality of headache, drug abuse, and unrestrained nastiness will get you ripped up and make things worse for the kids.  You probably already know this because you live it everyday.  </p>
<p>On the other hand, if, by making things better, you mean minimizing pain and maximizing stability (instead of making your dreamiest dreams of a tranquil union come true), then discard the old conventions and remember the calming power of a wall, whether it’s made of bricks, silence, politeness, or emotional restraint.  Hopefully, all of above.</p>
<p>Don’t be ashamed to show that you and your wife are not on the same page;  fuck convention, because trying so hard to get on the same page is impossible and killing you both.  Don’t be mean, but don’t hesitate to separate whenever you think the alternative won’t work.  </p>
<p>Friends and kids may urge you to make nice, kiss, communicate, and listen to the minister/couples therapist.  Don’t.  Be ready to stand by your own idea of what works best.</p>
<p>Your wife copes with her worries by maintaining a steady diet of denial and pills, but that&#8217;s working for her and no one else.  You can make everyone happy by being less of a good husband, more of a good roommate, and always a good dad.  </p>
<p><strong>STATEMENT</strong>:<br />
“My relationship with my wife is very important.  We’ve tried hard to stay close, despite a number of unresolvable problems, and too much closeness seems to make things worse.  We still believe it’s best to stay and work together.  What helps most are arrangements that allow us to live, work, and sleep separately when the tension or disagreements are too emotionally intense.  I refuse to talk with her—with or without a helper in the room—about our anger and the issues behind it, because it opens the door on bad feelings and impossible expectations that invariably cause more pain.  If, however, the talk is about ways of accepting and managing our differences and disengaging when we must, then I’m open to new suggestions.</p>
<blockquote><p>I thought I could help my 13-year-old step-daughter after I married her father and taught him how to set some limits with her, but what’s happened is that he continues to be a can’t-say-no, don’t-damage-her-self-esteem wuss, she continues to raise hell to show him how much she hates her evil stepmother, and I’m starting to worry about her bad influence on my own 7-year-old girl. My stepdaughter is not just a brat; she&#8217;s already gotten suspended twice for drinking at school.  Yes, twice.  Our therapist can’t seem to get my husband to take a stand and has started to get down on me about how angry I am and she’s right, I’m starting to hate both my husband and his daughter.  I don’t want to lose this marriage or act like an evil stepmother but I also want to protect my own girl. </p></blockquote>
<p>Not every mixed family can end up like the Brady Bunch.  Especially when Jan&#8217;s got a flask, Marsha&#8217;s pouring, and Cindy&#8217;s thirsty.  </p>
<p>Once again, if what you want is a conventional, all-healed-up family, you can’t have it.  It would be nice, but you gave it a good try and, as often happens in real life, you can never count on getting what you don’t control.  </p>
<p>So if that’s what you want, and you keep trying to get your husband to take a stand, or stop your stepdaughter from misbehaving, or make sure bad influences can’t reach your own child, you’ll make things worse.  As above, the first thing you can do to make things better is:  give up on the idea of one happy family.</p>
<p>Decide for yourself whether what you’ve got is worth keeping; ask whether your husband–the-wuss is a good-enough partner when his daughter isn’t acting up and whether there&#8217;s a good chance that your stepdaughter’s troubles won’t gobble up your savings or infect your younger daughter.  </p>
<p>If it’s worth staying, then cast aside convention, resign as a strong stepmother, and become a wise consort.  </p>
<p>Yes, people (including your husband) may criticize you for not being more nurturing and involved in the life of your troubled stepdaughter.  Assuming you aren’t, however, you’re free to avoid disciplining her or having much to do with her unless she asks for your help and is reasonably well behaved.  </p>
<p>You can keep your door locked.  You’re not punishing her; you’re just avoiding issues that can only end badly.  In the meantime, you can remind your daughter how you expect her to behave, no matter what her step-sisters do, and remind yourself that it&#8217;s better to be an ex-step-mother than an evil one.  </p>
<p><strong>STATEMENT</strong>:<br />
Prepare a statement that makes clear your distance is not intended to punish or demean.  “I love my husband but it’s become clear to me, after trying hard, that I can’t make a positive contribution to raising his child.  There’s no one to blame.  Her age and our chemistry are simply wrong.  The best way for us to manage our relationship is to keep it friendly but formal and avoid my assuming any parental authority.  By this I do not mean to criticize her or withhold love; merely to make the best of a family relationship.</p>

Worse is watching your co-parent, whether or not you’re still together, do the child-dooming while you have to watch.  Your instinct is to protect the brood at all costs, but think twice, because doing so will probably cause way more damage than a mullet ever could.<br />

<blockquote><p>My ex-wife was never that solid, but even I was surprised when she left me for her yoga instructor, who&#8217;s also a total fuck-up.  I agreed to joint custody because our daughter deserves to know her mother, no matter how stupid her mother is, but my wife&#8217;s visitation falls on the same days as our daughter&#8217;s ballet classes, and, wouldn&#8217;t you know, my ex- doesn&#8217;t have a car (her boyfriend crashed the one she got from me), so she tells me, in front of our daughter, that I’m selfish if I don’t drive the two of them to ballet and back, on her visitation day.  It makes me nuts, because I can&#8217;t figure out a way to say “no” without disappointing my daughter and looking like a meanie.  My goal is to stop my ex-wife from using our daughter to manipulate me.

<p>Attempting to stop your ex-wife&#8217;s visitation blackmail is never a good goal; it makes you reactive to her ability to make you feel guilty and/or look bad, rather than to your own ideas about what constitutes an appropriate sacrifice for your child’s welfare.  </p>
<p>Besides, you can’t stop her from using your worries about your daughter to push you around.  Basically, your ex-wife can fart in your face whenever she wants, even when you&#8217;re behind the wheel.  She&#8217;s already stunk up your marriage.  </p>
<p>If you accept and ignore humiliation (and bad smells), however, you can focus on the more important goal you’ve already embraced, which is doing what’s necessary for your daughter’s well-being.  </p>
<p><span id="more-601"></span>No, that doesn’t mean you should do whatever your ex-wife persuades your daughter to ask you for.  Don’t be guilted by your daughter’s pleading or your ex-wife’s attitude.  When your ex has visitation, she has responsibility, and you don’t. </p>
<p>Ask yourself what’s the worst that will happen if you don’t bail out your ex.  If she isn’t a total loser, she should be able to arrange a ride.  On the other hand, if she can’t, you may want to help out on the day of a dress rehearsal.</p>
<p>Decide for yourself whether the fight is worth it.  You have a right to spend your off-visitation times on other needs, and it may be good for your wife and daughter to know that you feel no guilt in doing so.  </p>
<p>On the other hand, you may decide it’s worth protecting your daughter from your wife’s incompetence.  It’s your call, but no matter what, if you&#8217;ve thought it through, you needn’t feel guilty.</p>
<p>Do what you think is right.  If you help out, it may feel like caving in, but it isn’t, not if you’ve followed procedures and made up your own mind.  Besides, if the stress has really got you down, there&#8217;s always yoga.  Clearly, it&#8217;s taken her far.</p>
<p><strong>STATEMENT</strong>:<br />
Write a statement you could give your ex.  “During your visitation days, it’s your responsibility, not mine, to deal with transportation problems.  I have other obligations and may need to be away or unavailable.  You’re free, however, to ask for my help (or anyone else’s) and I’ll be happy to let you know what I can do and under what circumstances.”  </p>
<blockquote><p>One of the first things that attracted me to my husband was his sense of humor; he&#8217;s a smart, sarcastic guy.  Unfortunately, that sense of humor doesn&#8217;t translate well to our kids, who, as far as I can tell, are hurt by the same dark, sarcastic tone I so enjoy.  I’ve asked him to lighten up because the kids are sensitive, but he acts like I’m telling him he’s a bad parent and then he tells me I’m not doing such a good job myself.  I don’t like where this is going, but I’m worried about the harm he can do the kids.  My goal is to protect the kids and get my husband to back off without antagonizing him.   </p></blockquote>
<p>Sure, you can get your husband to change his parenting style.  Talking to him about it is a great idea, and you should do it lots of times.  Then, while you&#8217;re at it, you should figure out how to cure cancer and run cars on old twinkie wrappers.  </p>
<p>OK, now that we&#8217;ve done using some of your husband&#8217;s patented sarcasm, you&#8217;ve got to accept that your husband will be sarcastic and the kids will have to learn how to deal with it.</p>
<p>On the other hand, you can help everyone take your husband’s style less personally if you begin by accepting it yourself.  Yes, you may well feel worried and angry, but keep your feelings to yourself.  </p>
<p>Your goal isn’t to express yourself, it’s to help your family manage your husband’s sarcasm.  Instead of telling your husband to stop, decide when it’s necessary to speak up and have a response ready.  </p>
<p>For instance, step in if the kids seem upset and/or your husband has implied, intentionally or not, that they’ve been bad, stupid, or ludicrous.  You can spoil his joke without implying that he’s bad, stupid, or ludicrous, just by telling him gently to make fun of the kids all he likes, but you think they’re being normal kids and there’s nothing wrong with that.  </p>
<p>Then everybody gets kisses, nobody&#8217;s feelings are hurt, and everyone lives happily ever after.  Suuuuure.  </p>
<p><strong>STATEMENT</strong>:<br />
Prepare a non-blaming response if he accuses you of undermining or humiliating him in front of the kids.  “I enjoy your humor and think the kids will, too, as they grow older, but right now it sometimes hurts and mystifies them and gets a bad reaction, even when you’re trying to help them by pointing out something they need to know.  When I think they’re too sensitive to take your meaning properly, I’ll urge them not to take your criticism personally, hoping it will help them separate the sting of your tone from the value of your ideas.”</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Bad habits are rarely personal—your average nail-biter doesn’t have a cuticle vendetta—but when one half of a marriage gets into bad behavior, even if it has nothing to do with his/her spouse, it’s hard for the other half not to blame his/herself.  Women want to discuss the bad habit, men quietly stew, and either way, something impersonal feels like an affront.  There’s no escaping the pain when a partnership starts to break down, but you can find ways to talk about bad habits without implying that anyone has failed, or doesn’t care, or just plain bites.<br />

<blockquote><p>My husband and I have two kids, we both work hard, and he always used to find time to play with the kids and spend time with me, but in the last few months, he’s buried himself in online poker in the evenings, and the kids see a lot less of him (I do, too, and it’s been a long time since we had sex).  He tells me there’s nothing wrong and that he&#8217;s not betting with real cash, but I know what I see, so I’ve told him we need to talk, and that’s what’s really infuriating, because then he won’t talk at all. <p>You’re assuming there’s something bothering your husband that you can figure out and communicate about, because that’s what would allow you to fix things; that it&#8217;s not the poker that&#8217;s really the problem (or the not being poked).</p>
<p>Before you sit him down and try to take him away from the e-poker table, ask yourself what happens if it doesn’t work, which it often doesn’t, and clearly, in your case, hasn’t.  </p>
<p><span id="more-598"></span>Remember, there are lots of reasons for him to shut down other than his having something on his mind.  He could be depressed and/or stuck in some kind of bad habit that he can’t shake.  Even on-line poker can become addictive, whether or not the money&#8217;s fake.</p>
<p>If you push him to talk when he can’t think of anything to say or can’t own up to the bad habit or isn’t ready to fight it, he’ll get quiet and sullen.  Then you’ll feel more certain that he’s angry about something he won’t tell you about and angry at you, and you’ll be angry at him, and upset that you’re angry, and worried about the kids’ reacting to your anger, and it’s a mess.</p>
<p>The issue will feel more and more personal.  You’ll wind up water-boarding him, which won’t get you useful information and/or do the marriage any good.  You will bet the house, and you&#8217;ll lose.</p>
<p>Remember, he’s withdrawn from the kids, too, and probably from the dog.  Your own behavior was OK before and it hasn’t changed; something just happened to your husband that you can’t control. Withdrawal always feels personal, but it isn’t.  If he had a tell to reveal his true feelings, you&#8217;d know it, and it ain&#8217;t there.  </p>
<p>Your goal shouldn’t be to fix your marriage, because that’s not in your power.  It’s to protect yourself and the kids from feeling responsible for what he’s doing, make the best of it, and not let anger make things worse (though Lord knows you have reason to feel angry).  </p>
<p>If his little habit starts cutting into his other obligations, or if he starts gambling in earnest, then you&#8217;ve got a bigger problem.  For now, he&#8217;s holding the line, and if you can’t make the best of it, you can always bluff in the meantime.</p>
<p><strong>STATEMENT</strong>:<br />
“You’ve always been a great husband and father, and we’ve been a great family together, but the huge amount of time you now spend playing poker has made you unavailable, which has all of us hurting.  I don’t think anyone, including you, has done anything wrong, but I wonder if you’re depressed or have got stuck in some kind of bad habit.  It happens to good people.  I wish you could see what’s happening and try to change it, but that’s your call.   Meanwhile, I’ll assume you can’t be available and the rest of us will need to adjust.  I’m sorry, because you’ll lose chances to share things with us and I’ll have to rely more on my friends when I’d rather talk to you.  If I can help, let me know.” </p>
<blockquote><p>After my kids went off to college, I dealt with it by drinking too much.  My husband&#8217;s always worked long hours, so he didn&#8217;t notice at first, but I managed to get his attention by totaling our car (with our daughter in the passenger seat).  We were both fine and I haven&#8217;t had a drink since that day two years ago, and, while my kids have been very understanding, I can&#8217;t seem to win back my husband&#8217;s trust, no matter what I do.  I&#8217;ve done rehab, attended daily AA meetings, done my best to be a model wife by anyone&#8217;s standards, and it doesn&#8217;t seem to make a difference.  My goal is to get my husband to trust me again.  </p></blockquote>
<p>Though there’s nothing you’d like more than to regain your husband’s trust, it’s a terrible goal because it focuses on someone else’s feelings about you, rather than on your own priorities and values.  </p>
<p>Surely AA has taught you to respect the things you can’t control, and surely, after raising kids with him, you know your husband is one of those things.  </p>
<p>You know, mothers who love to nurture and are particularly responsive to their kids’ needs often have a harder time coping with an empty nest.  You are simply gifted at putting other people first and it’s both strength and weakness.  </p>
<p>If emptiness starts you drinking, you feel terrible about letting down your family and the shame drives you to drink more.  Thinking about your husband is unavoidable—second nature, even—but, as you’ve already learned, it’s dangerous.</p>
<p>If you haven’t relapsed by now, it’s probably because you’ve found your own reasons to stay sober.  Perhaps the AA meetings have given you support that’s separate from your family and also, perhaps, a perspective your husband doesn’t have.  </p>
<p>In AA meetings, alcoholics don’t have to feel ashamed of being alcoholic; they try to be proud of what they’re doing about it.  They build a wall between their alcoholism and how they manage it and between the past and what they’re doing now.  Every day, shame and sensitivity threaten to make them believe that they’re failures and their job is to protect and accept themselves.</p>
<p>When you and your alcoholism were outed, you were probably mortified before you discovered big advantages.  Yes, you lost friends who couldn’t accept you, but then you didn’t need to worry any longer about their acceptance, and could feel much more secure about those who stuck with you and respected your efforts to get sober.  </p>
<p>Your husband may not be able to accept and respect you as much as you deserve.  If so, it means he loved the glossy version of you more than the real woman.  You can’t control his feelings, no matter how painful they may be to both of you.  </p>
<p>You must, however, protect yourself from trying to get respect from someone who may not have it to give.  Better be sad and get it over with than pine over something or someone that’s lost, and best do all of it sober.  </p>
<p><strong>STATEMENT</strong>:<br />
“My dear husband, you may well feel you can’t get back to the way you used to feel about me.  I was always afraid of losing your respect and that’s one reason I covered up my drinking.  Now that I’m sober, I’m proud of what I do.  I take no responsibility for sometimes wanting to drink and never knowing whether I’ll drink again.  I can’t take responsibility for your feelings.  I can only take responsibility for what I’ve done with the problem, and I’m much prouder of that than I’ve ever been.  If you can accept me the way I am, our relationship can be better than ever.  If that’s not possible, then there’s nothing either one of us can do.”</p>
